Border Fence of Jericho

Bush’s stunt project known as the border fence is, like all things George, idiotic.

Great Wall of China didn’t work as advertised and the Berlin Wall was a blight on humanity and still stands as a sign of oppression. So will the same be true for Bush’s 700 mile wall? Assuredly.

The big glaring error is the planned wall is only 700 miles long while the Mexican border is 1951 miles long – this leaves a gap the size of Texas to walk through. And if a border agent was station every 100 feet, you would need over 66,000 agents on duty at anyone time. And this is without staff or back-up. For three shifts you would need 198,000 agents and if you provided two-person teams plus support staff, you are looking at a half a million people to stand guard. And that total is just for the gaps!

Then there are the environmental concerns. Through the environmentally sensitive area of the Sonora Desert, fencing would also struggle to cross hundreds of creek beds which are prone to flash floods during the summer. To deal with the rain and the debris, hundreds of culverts would need to be installed and they would need to be large enough to allow for soil, brush and even small trees to pass through. If a tree can pass though, so can a human.

Illegal immigration is a social problem, not a military one. To solve social problems, you need smart social programs. Neo-cons, however, are not smart enough to realize that.
