What have the Republicans accomplished?

4-27-07.png

Let’s all put on our non-partisan hats today and try to come up with a list of the positive things the Republicans have accomplished in the last 20 years.

Come on, you can do this. I will barely hurt.

I’ll wait.

Take your time.

Nothing?

Me neither and I slept in my damn hat.

  • What have the Republicans accomplished?…

Blogger invites readers to post accomplishments of the GOP for the last 20 years….

  • Ronald Regean
    1981-1989:
    - He helped turn the poor economy around
    - Granted, the “War on Drugs” is little different than the “War on Terror”, but after the initiation of this so -called war, knowledge, understanding and prevetion of drug use an abuse was in the decline.
    - In a step forward for Women’s rights, he appointed the first female Supreme Court Justice
    - Worked closely with Mikhail Gorbachev to help not only end teh Cold War, but tear down the Berlin Wall and remove the ‘Iron Curtain’.

    Geroge H.W. Bush
    1989-1993
    - Deposed the dictator Manuel Noriega from Panama, who was using his country to facilitiate Drug Trafficking.
    - After the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein, lead the multinational forces to come to the aid of the beleagured nation and liberated it.
    - Continued work with Mikhail Gorbachev to further facilitate the end of the Cold War and laid the groundwork for partnership with Russia.

    George Bush
    2001-Present
    - Despite popular belief, the American economy is still strong, and the Dow Jones Average not only maintaining healthy growth (though not necessarily consistant), has set record highs.
    - An Article I read earlier today basically states that new methods of using and/or recycling current levels of Toxic Waste from nuclear reactors was initiatied by Bush’s long-term strategy to meet our power requirements without creating more greenhouse gases:

Yes, all of the Pros I have listed are riddled with half-truths and internal policies and going-ons. However, the same could be said for Bill Clinton (whom has been the only Democrat in office for the past 20+ years) as well.

I am certan that Clinton had his fair share of the goods, as well as the bads during his 8 years. And every one of those is rife with the same stuff that exists for the Republicans.

I am neither Democrat nor Republican… I really do not like either party terribly much to be perfectly honest. Both are rotten to the core. But the way I see it, is that despite all the crap you (and anyone else) slings at the Republicans, they must be doing something right, because they tend to hold office more often and longer than Democrats do.

  • a) Nothing the government has ever did to stop drug use has put much of a dent in it, despite the trillions of dollars in tax money wasted on the effort.

    b) The dow jones is not a good indicator of “the economy”. Because 95% of America has been doing consistantly worse, with a very slight uptick during the Clinton years, since the 70s.

    c) If by liberation, you mean dropping incredible amounts of bombs on mostly civilians in foreign lands, then sure, he certainly liberated them.

    d) The cold war ended because of the Russians, not because of what we did. The war budget didn’t kill communism. The fact that populist dictatorship was a contradiction killed communism.

Oh, and for bonus: The reason the Democrats have such trouble holding onto office is a combination of Republicans exploiting intollerance (latent racism, jingoism, religion, homophobia) and selling out to big business (who give them incredibly more money than the Democrats).

  • I disagree with some of your statements:

A – I grew up in the 80s, and oddly enough, I noticed a whole HELL of a lot of “dont do drugs” type ads that went on TV, magazines and the like. There is plenty of documented evidence that during that time drug use and abuse declined in young people. After those campaigns and ads stopped, that stuff, of course picked up again.

B – Perhaps the Dow Jones is, perhaps it is not. I vaguely seem to recall how Recessions, Depressions and such are based off of how the Stock Market is doing. I cannot actually think of a better guage of National Economy than the Stock Market. The Economy may not be doing well for YOU personally, but how well YOU are doing economically is hardly an indication that the country’s economy is going downt he toilet. The fact that the Middle Class is in a steady state of decline is not due to poor economoy, but something else entirely.

C – By which ‘Liberation’ action are you referring to? Panama? Sorry, I have no sympathy for dictators, tyrants, drug lords or others of that nature. I also have no sympathy for those that would defend or associate themselves with that. If you are referring to Kuwait, then your memory is farily short. I suggest you go back to newspapers, magazines and such from the early 90s and read up on what happened.

D – The Cold war ended because the USSR continued to use their style of governing to maintian an Arms Race (and a competition with anything else for that matter), and they simply could not compete. Yeah, the USSR extended their hand to us in truce, but we did NOT have to take that hand, and we did NOT have to help them after the fact. We have done both.

For your Bonus: I am not necessarily talking about the last 20 years here. I am going back further as well. Take a look at how many presidents we have had that are Democrat (or the equivilent) vs. Republican (or that equivelent).

Racisim, Jingoism, Religion, Homophobia, etc. are not problems and issues that are new, nor are they problems that are limited to the United States or political parties. If you ask me, all of those problems should not be limited to political parties (getting rid of Racisim should not be a matter of political party, Equal rights for Homosexuals should not be a political issue or be dictated by party). But they are.

At some point down the line, somebody decided that such matters ARE political issues, and a line was drawn in the sand. Whether you like it or not, the majority of the people obviously have chosen to embrace racial superiority (it EXISTS, it is NATURAL. Get over it), Patriotism (Blind or not), Religious Superiority (see racal superiority), the general rejection of something that is considered by most people in today’s modern world to be taboo.

People are going to go with what is comfortable for them. That is the way of people in general. It isn’t right, but it isn’t wrong either. It is just how things are.

  • Unique

Ha Ha. That’s rich. Bryan has it “righter” I’d say.

Chernobyl was the nail in the coffin for the USSR – everything else was just the prequel.

Ronald Regan – bad actor – but hey! ketchup is a vegetable. Who knew? Air traffic controllers? We don’t need no stinking air traffic controllers! Let industry regulate itself! Why, what a wonderful idea!
