It’s Memorial Day, have a hot dog.

Today, Bush will place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and sadly, I find it laughable.

Bush has not gone to a single funeral for a soldier who has died in his War on Terror but Bush does find time to go to a soldier’s grave that he HASN’T had a hand in killing.

It is my belief that the average American spends more time worrying about the soldiers than the President does. Bush only worries about it when he is in front of a camera.

The thing Bush does spend a lot of time worrying about is if he can get oil to $100 a barrel. His time is running out.

  • Unique

I already have a hot dog. He’s called the Commander in Chief.

And my heart is torn asunder because of it.

    May God have mercy.

The final part of the Memorial Day tribute from the political comic strip, Town Called Dobson. Very touching….

  • I read your strip every day via MLW

  • You know…

    It is interesting….

    No.

Not interesting. Sad. Very sad, about how quickly we forget things. I am guilty of this too, and I will freely admit that.

Thing is, this weekend I had two good reminders of what Memorial Day means.

On Sunday, I wached Episodes 6-10 of Band of Brothers with some friends of mine. Episodes 1-5 were great, but those last 5 had far more meaning in them to the sacrifice those guys made in WWII. And not just American’s either.

The Germans were shown to be men of honor and respect. Even in defeat, they marched from the front lines with their heads held high. No regrets, only disheartened that their best was not good enough.

Watching those last 5 episodes gave me an idea of what sort of hell those men and women had to go through back then. As someone who served in the US Army and in Iraq, I do not know if I would have been strong enough. It gave me a lot to think about the rest of the day.

On Monday, I had a gathering with some friends. While eating, our host stopped us from gabbering about this or that and asked us to take a moment to actually remember Memorial Day. Why it was established and what it means.

It has been a VERY long time since ANYONE outside of the United States Army has done that in my presence.

But it got me thinking though…

How quickly we, as Americans, forget the purpose of Memorial Day: To remember the fallen soldiers, minuteman, Unionist, Confederate, Marine, GI, Dogboy, Airman, Seaman…everyone who fought, bled and died so that others could live.

Those soldiers did not ASK to go to Germany and Japan, trailing gouts of blood, sweat and tears every inch of the way. Nor did they demand to go to mountains of Korea, the jungles of Viet-Nam or the deserts of the Middle East.

    Yet they are there.

They did not ask to be sent into Hell…yet into hell they gladly walked without regret.

No matter what you think of the men and women in charge of this country both present, past and future, remember that it is the soldier, the sailor, the marine and the airman as well as those in public service; the Fireman, the Police man and many others, that has allowed you to have the life that you have today.
