I had the most depressing meeting of my life yesterday (and in some ways uplifting but on a personal level that would bore you to tears). The reason it was depressing is because of who it was with and our discussion of the state of the world.
My meeting was with a friend of mine who is a military contractor and a former Republican. This guy is one of the last bastions of business leaders in America who “get it.” He has no problem making piles of cash, but he makes sure he EARNS it and he sure as hell does. He is one of the hardest workers I know and can work magic with troubled companies. He strives to keep manufacturing and jobs in the US but I believe in his heart, those days are numbered.
As we discussed the state of the world, and the tragedy of the Bush Administration, he has declared the American Dream is dead as a doornail. “If you want the American Dream, go work in Europe, it is alive and well there. Bush has so destroyed the middle class, I doubt it can return with the business leaders we have now.” Then we lamented the lack of leadership in corporate America. Over the last few years I have met with a lot of CEOs that frankly of no business running a business. The level of corruption and total lack of foresight is very troubling. These anti-CEOs are either running their business into the ground or flip the business and cash out – then go on to ruin another company.
We talked more about how to fix it. One of his fast “emergency fixes” is “Vote Hillary Or Else!” The “else” being the total collapse of American society, economy and government. Keep in mind this is coming from a “life-long Republican” who voted straight tickets up until 2004 – Kerry was his first Democratic vote and remember, he is a military contractor.
Maybe I am depressed for no reason. If someone like my friend can make such an extreme turnaround, maybe the rest of the country has had similar flashes of Jeffersonian insight?
Regardless, we both agreed the Bush Administration is just a front for Big Oil and Cheney is guiding the chariots to secure and exploit the last of the fossil fuel resources in the world. It is all about oil – everything. Iraq? Oil. Gonzales? Oil. Warrantless wiretaps? Oil. All of it. In every scandal there it the recurring stain of fossil fuel.
I am very tired of BushCo’s oil slick.

My thoughts are with you on this one man…well…for the most part.
My only disagreement is that this is Cheny’s doing, or that BushCo has had much to do with it.
My observations, conversations, etc. have shown me that the problems we are facing now, are not necessarily the results of the last 7 years. This is basicly the rewards that we have sown over many, many years (at least 20-30…if not more). The way I figure it, is that if BushCo did not get into office…they (or someone like them) would get it eventually.
You cant blame BushCo for the problems we are having…
But you CAN blame him for being a part of the problem, you CAN blame him for sticking with the status quo (as opposed to making things better) and you CAN blame him for making things worse.
Do I think Hillary is the way to go? ehhh….not really. No. Frankly, I think we need another revolution. The old government needs to be removed totally and everything reworked from the Constitution + Bill of Rights on up. Everything.

Freak – Pull your head out.
I hope no one listens to your friend, friend. “Vote Hillary Or Else!â€
Or we really will be doomed.

Pull my head out?
Excuse me? Are you trying to tell me that the problems that our country is facing across the board is the culmination of just 7 years of a few idiots holding the Executive Office?
Prove me wrong. Show me that our current problems are not the results of past actions.

No. I’m not trying to tell you ‘it all started’ 7 years ago.
Bush is the wonderbot the GOP has used to further their pro-fuck the US and give me all your money criminal cabal.
It started back with Watergate. The juniors of that time are the deceivers of this time.
Clearer now?

Whoa Unique! Are you pointing to Fred Thompson et al? Who else in the government today was there at Watergate and covering up?
Anime, I don’t think I can vote for Hillary either…and I want to. I’m a woman, I feel guilty not supporting the possible first woman in the White House. And I cannot imagine rebuilding the entire republic from the BOR and the Constitution onward.

How did I post a comment without blaming Bush for something?

Then what are you suggesting Unige?
My personal thoughts on the direciton that this country has gone is generally screwed up from the floor up (I would prefer to use far more colorful language…but I am tired from a full day at Otakon…and I have but a few hours to sleep and do a repeat of today). With that in mind, I htink some of our Forefathers got it right: every so often, there needs to be a revolution…a change in the way this government is run…a chance to get new blood and thoughts into the system. This nation is due for it, I think.
And given my experience in the Army, the best way to fix/clean something up is to tear it all down, start from the bare basics and go from there. Our country was based off of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If there is to be a revolution and a true cleansing of the corruption and a good, strong effort to get back to what our country was founded on…we need to get rid of everything and start from the absolute basics.
In all seriousness, the current string of politicians, both on the 2008 ballot and those looking for the 2012 and beyond do not impress me. I have zero confidence in their capebilities to run things as they should and put this country back on track. There is too much government, too much corruption and far too much beuracracy on Capitol Hill right now, and I think it needs to go.
As for Hillary…I was a soldier, and she has proven time and again that she hates soldiers (I cannot fathom why…but anyway). I have the genuine feeling that putting her in charge would put my friends and those I served with in far more danger than they are in now…even if she manages to somehow pull them out of Iraq (a highly unlikely event). I say this, because she will cut their pay, their benifits and services avalible to them. A soldier’s life is already hard in peacetime…even harder during wartime. I don’t trust her to keep my friends safe.
For me, it is not a gender issue. Anybody who can prove to me that they have what it takes to do the right thing for this country gets my vote and AF40K’s Seal of Approval. I have not seen anyone worthy of that except for a random herd of untrained monkeys.
Unique, if you somehow think that I still have my head stuck up my ass, then I challange you to take a look at the current problems and issues with our country and show me a canidate who can and will fix them. I challenge you to point out to me things that could (and should) be done to fix those problems. Until you can present to me an intelligent, well-thought out retort. You know; You tell me what is wrong, why you think it is wrong and then your counter-arguement. Retorts such as “Pull your head out” is childish, makes no sense and is not worthy of my time or attention.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place.
