In Parts One and Two, I discussed the support Kucinich has and the irrational fear also associated with electing Kucinich. Today, I want to focus on the secondary soundbite I have heard over the last few weeks about Kucinich. The Kucinich critics to have their work cut out for them because they need to go back THIRTY YEARS to find something to complain about. Their soundbite is “he drove Cleveland into bankruptcy.” This, it turns out, is a lie. It is a Halliburton straw man with a touch of Sopranos level intrigue.
Dennis Kucinich started out as the Mayor of Cleveland in 1977 – the youngest Mayor of a large city in America. The city was hip deep in trouble with it’s finances and crime. Not to mention, when Kucinich was sworn in, Cleveland was in one of its worst snow storms with winds of over 100 miles per hour – a sign of things to come.
He made good appointments and bad appointments for his administration and one of those, the Chief of Police, Richard Hongisto, proved to be real bad. The fiasco went so terribly wrong that a recall election was called and Kucinich won – maintaining control of the failing city.
One of his campaign promises was to not sell Cleveland’s public electricity utility, Cleveland Public Power to Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company – a corrupt company with a stack of federal violations of anti-trust laws held against it. When Kucinich got in office, the mafia figured out that this young Mayor was actually going to keep his word and NOT sell Cleveland Public Power to Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company so the mafia put a hit out for the murder of Kucinich. Yep, Dennis Kucinich was the target of mafioso assassins, but that was nothing compared to the EXTREME pressure of the city council and local banks had placed on Kucinich to sell the utility. In the end, Kucinich still said no.
How many times have we wished for that tenacity in our politicians when dealing with Halliburton?
The main city creditor, Cleveland Trust, ignored all of Kucinich’s debt restructuring plans and placed the city in default of payment. Here is the kicker – the bank’s board had seven members who were on the payroll of Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and they were also on that company’s board. The collusion was right out of the Cheney Play Book. The bank was a major shareholder in CEI and thus the sale of the city’s municipal light utility would have benefited the bank, not the citizens of Cleveland.
And again, Kucinich stood his ground. He put the decision to the people, vote to sell to CEI or vote for a .5% tax increase. Cleveland voted for higher taxes. Corporate interests lost and remarkably, the mafia recalled the assassin.
Cleveland never went into bankruptcy and the loan was paid and would have been paid if CEI and Cleveland Trust weren’t involved in a conspiracy to rob the citizens of Cleveland of almost a third of a billion dollars, in 1970’s money.
CEI was later acquired by FirstEnergy, the company was responsible for the 2003 blackout. Cleveland Public Power is still cranking out the watts to the city of Cleveland. Cleveland Trust is now Key Bank.
So that is the story, Kucinich is guilty of not bowing to Big Energy and ignored the deployment of assassins just to keep a campaign promise.
Here is my question, which of the “leading candidates” in this race; Clinton, Obama or Edwards would have withstood that kind of pressure?
Is it any wonder Ohio keeps sending Kucinich back to Congress? They know which side he is on.

HOLY SHIT!
No…seriously…
This guy is my wet-dream politician!!! Seriously!
Oh, and here is something that should be read: http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/20/rove.strategies.ap/index.html
I found that article on Monday and I realized that if Hillary (or Obama) gets the Democratic Ticket, this is how it is going to happen:
- GoP and/or Media will blast Hillary (Obama or anyone else), thus causing the Democrats to rally to DEFEND said target.
- People see the target all over the place and THAT is who they see, and that is who they vote for in the primaries, that is who gets put onto the ticket.
- Once the person of choice (in this case, Hillary as she is so heated) is on the ticket, the GoP canidate is a shoe-in because the Democrat canidate is utterly pathetic and/or invokes such hatred that people will vote against them on general principal.
So the way it stands is that the GoP will do whatever they can to keep Hillary in the lime-light because they KNOW they can beat Hillary. They may be able to beat Obama…but if you notice that canidates like Kucinich and Edwards are all but unknown, yet they are the best options.
Any ideas on this tactic can be beaten? …I mean other than my usual solution: “Set it on Fire” that is.

I love this man, Dennis Kucinich, and I love you for telling the tale. Four decades later and Kucinich is still a man of the people!

Too bad America is not mature enough to understand and appreciate the integrity of someone like Dennis Kucinich. – Hans

Great!!!! I am going to spread the links to this series far and wide.
Kucinich is the only sane and humane choice for President.

My take (an an American having lived in (West) Germany for a year:
It’s less about maturity and an inability to understand and appreciate and perhaps more that
America is not evolved enough to accept and embrace the integrity of someone like Dennis Kucinich.
(But when half of the pool of candidates doesn’t even BELIEVE in evolution, the challenge is huge.)
Those of us who are of that evolved ilk are doing our best to replace the ignorance with possibility.
What if…

I’m sorry, even after watching the videos Kucinich leaves me cold, stormbear.
Anime, Hillary mentioned Karl Rove’s remarks during the Iowa debates last Sunday. Something like “I don’t know why Karl is obsessed with me.”
How does the GOP “know” they can beat Hillary? Why don’t they “know” they can beat Obama? Huh?
August 24th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Just one more thing…Kucinich is everything I want in a candidate, why does he leave e cold?
August 24th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
I have told you why the GoP thinks they can beat Hillary several times already:
There are enough Republican and neutral people that HATE Hillary enough to vote for her competition just because they are not Hillary.
Just because you would not do that does not mean that 70% (or whatever number would make sense) of the voters out there also wouldn’t. They can work and twist their spin-machine to destroy Hillary in the same way they destroyed Kerry as well.
Consider this: if this country is, for example, split 40% Liberal, 40% GoP and 20% neutral, the GoP already has 40% of the votes. Even if Hillary has 55% of the popularity…and can manage to pull an additional 15% of those that don’t want her onto her side, that is less than a third.
I know those are not exactly accurate numbers…but there is NO WAY Hillary is going to pull all of the Democratic voters onto her side. There is NO WAY she is going to pull all of the middle-grounders and there is NO WAY she is going to get many (if any) of the Republican voters.
That said, if Hillary gets onto the ticket, the only work they have to do is make Hillary look like an aboslutly terrible leader…and they can do a wonderful job of that. Hell, Hillary does that on her own anyway!
The situation is a little different for Obama, because he is a Democat, but he is more difficult to hate pollitcally. They can dig up some dirt on him, I am sure…but I do not think they could do it to the same effect that they could with Hillary.
That said, the GoP is fairly confident that they can beat Hilliary, so they will do what they can to get her on the Democratic Ticket. Do I really need to go into this again about why Hillary has little chance of getting into office?
As far as Kucinich leaving you cold…even though he is everything you want, the problem he has is that he has little charisma and almost no presence. He could be in the room and you would not even know he was there. This does not mean he is automatically a poor leader (as his record speaks for itself), it is just that he has no charisma to sell himself.
If Kucinich has any failing at all…that is it.
August 24th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
Most people allow the mainstream news to keep them in a perpetually brainwashed state. And too many people choose style over substance when evaluating a candidate.
The only thing that matters is ISSUES. And Kucinich is the best on issues by light years and hands down.
Some of these criticisms are just ridiculous. He has been criticized for being ONLY 5 foot 7 inches tall, for having big ears and, in the last campaign, for being a bachelor. What do any of these have to do with being a great President or not?
Those who say he lacks charisma have never seen any of his speeches. He is the most magical and electrifying political speaker in America and the best impromptu speaker too.
August 24th, 2007 at 8:04 pm
No charisma? That’s insane. If you really believe that, it only proves to me that you’ve failed to pay attention.
August 24th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
We’ve tried the furds; now for the charisma of a Lincoln!
SWITCH TO KUCINICH!
August 25th, 2007 at 2:42 am
Charisma and presence is a lot more than simply getting up and speaking. It is more than making good points and possessing perfect intonation and inflection.
When I say he lacks charisma and presence, he blends in and is easy missed in a crowd or on a stage. I can point out his biggest competitors (both Republican and Democrat) out of a crowd. He does not naturally attract attention by simply showing up somewhere; His mere appearance does not DEMAND attention.
Rich and Gordon, it is both of you that have not paid attention. The ONLY criticisim that I have managed to find for Kucinich is that he lacks charisma and presence…out of all of the possible failings and shortcommings a man could POSSIBLY ever have, those are fairly small and insignificant.
However, this hurts him because that lack of presence or charisma does not create a “HERE I AM! LOOK AT ME CAMERAS!” so he would be realitivly ignored. He could be proactive and pull the cameras to him and that would work, but they do not naturally gravitate towards him.
Does any of this make him a bad canidate? HELL NO! But it DOES make his presidential campaign more difficult. Regardless, I still intend to back him.
August 25th, 2007 at 6:16 am
Maybe if he looked ghoulish, hired crooked police chiefs and dressed in drag while he takes credit for saving America from terrorism, like Giuliani, Kucinich would have that presence that Americans demand from their candidates.
addendum: and lie alot
August 25th, 2007 at 11:36 am
“lack of presence or charisma does not create a “HERE I AM! LOOK AT ME CAMERAS!â€
The people who pay to have those cameras there do not want Dennis Kucinich on the air. It’s not an issue of charisma. It is an issue of politics and media intervention.
Just look at the minimal screen time he was given at the ABC debate of Aug 19th. And even more revealing, the abcnews.com poll that was pulled off their website after Kucinich won (twice!).
At the same time, over 400 letters of support for Dennis vanished from the same website.
I’ve seen the man electrify crowds with his presence several times now. Hopefully you’ll get the chance someday soon.
August 25th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
I love Kucinich for having the courage of his convictions and plan to support him. How do you know ‘the mafia’ had a contract out on Kucinich? Is there any evidence of that?
August 25th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
You are all wrong when you don’t say charisma and presence doesn’t matter!! I remember I said (I think it was here) that when I turned on the Democratic Iowa debates I said to myself “OMG Kucinich isn’t there!” But he was there…WAY OVER on the left (my left) out of camera range!! Now do you think that was an accident? He even commented on never being asked anything (of course George S. questioned mainly Biden, Obama and Clinton with an occasional nod to Dodd and Richardson)
Anime, you have it right when you say: However, this hurts him because that lack of presence or charisma does not create a “HERE I AM! LOOK AT ME CAMERAS!†so he would be realitivly ignored. He could be proactive and pull the cameras to him and that would work, but they do not naturally gravitate towards him.
Guys you gotta forget Kucinich…
Does any of this make him a bad canidate? HELL NO! But it DOES make his presidential campaign more difficult. Regardless, I still intend to back him.
August 25th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
The last 2 sentences of my comment are from Anime’s comment…
August 25th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Thanks so much for this essay and series of film clips. I intend to share far and wide. Kucinich is the ONLY candidate worth supporting as he is the only one who has demonstrated he cannot be bought!
August 26th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
This man is too good to run for president in America. There are way too many sheep sleeping with the FOXes. Americans are too stupid and have blinded patriotism.
August 27th, 2007 at 9:14 am
Place: Out there in mainstream America, somewhere, probably in your own neighborhood.
Everybody in the room is thinking to themselves, “Man I really like this guy, Kucinich! Too bad that all the talking heads say he’s unelectable. Oh, well, better not waste my vote. I guess I’ll vote for Obama or Edwards or Clinton.”
End result:
Kucinich was the best candidate and might win should each person listen to his own heart and not let himself be manipulated, but everyone listens to the talking heads, who bend over backwards to undermine and marginalize Kucinich at every chance, instead of their own hearts, and the self-fulfilling prophesy comes true and proclaims itself proof of its own prediction. Gee, what a surprise!
Kucinich HAS integrity. That’s the problem. That makes him a threat to the corrupt moneyed interests who control everything you see, hear, think and believe, not to mention every political decision which affects each and every American at every level. That’s why he’s marginalized. The MSM and its minions like Stephanopoulos will see to it that you get the impression Kucinich should be humored but not taken seriously.
But, you have a voice. Unite. Let Stephanopoulos, ABC and the rest of the manipulating bozos in that farse called the MSM know that you’re not fooled by their tactics of marginalizing Kucinich. Tell them that he has the right to as much air time at the debates as the rest of the candidates. Tell them to stop trying to manipulate your opinion and just let each of the candidates, having been given equal time, make their own cases for themselves.
Publius Jr.

Thank you Ausha.
That is exactly how I feel.
I do feel that Kucinich has every possibility of winning….but that is ONLY if the Amercian PEOPLE stop listening to to the talking heads and go with what they, as people want.
Now, this lack of presence on Kucinich’s part could be manipulation on the part of the MSM (I will assume that this is Main Stream Media) and those who control them. I say this because Kucinich IS very VERY much of a threat to them. As president he would have the power to do what is right…and the backbone to make it happen and not submit to the lobbyists, etc.
By god this man reminds me of the presidential heros that I read about during the early 1900s! You know, Teddy Roosivelt and some of the others – the ones that beat back the Big Money and guided this nation properly! Men like that are bloody HEROS!
Kucinich is a breath of fresh air because of those qualities. we NEED him to be president.

maryt,
You leave me cold with your ridiculous FAKE obsession with charisma.
Better stick to The National Enquirer and People Magazine for all of your important gnus items.
Throwing illogical ad hominems the way you do just proves how ignorant your truly are.
Besides, I wish I lacked the charisma Kucinich lacked to attract the best looking and most intelligent spouse of all the presidential candidates, both GOP and Democratic alike.

Were any of you even in the area when he was mayor? No period better epitomized the “Mistake by the Lake” mantra given to Cleveland more than the Kucinich years as mayor (except of course when the Cuyahoga burned in ‘69). It took almost 2 decades of change brought on by the likes of post Kucinich Mayors like Michael White and George Voinovich for the city to live down his legacy.
No he didn’t bankrupt the city but the city’s finances didn’t improve under his leadership either and most agree they got worse.
Has he learned from that experience? More than likely yes but putting this man in any position higher than seat in Congress he somehow continues to get re-elected to is just asking for trouble.
September 8th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Bob S.:
Yes, as a matter of fact, I was a student at Case
Western Reserve U., and the then-president of the university, Louis Toepfer, sent a letter to the parents of undergraduates when the city defaulted saying that University Circle had its own police and fire departments and not to worry about Cleveland’s fate. This wasn’t so many years after the Hough-Norwood riots, and years of Rebublican cronyism had led Cleveland down the same path that Bush-Cheney are taking the country: circling the drain -and that’s how Kucinich inherited the city. Kucinich is a graduate of the CWRU Law School, and he was treated very badly by his alma mater. To his credit, he moves forward, acknowledges mistakes made, shares credit for optimal outcomes and essentially embodies the characteristics of Jim Collins’ Good To Great book’s definition of Transformational Leaders. The fact that his appearance isn’t made for TV seems to be the sole issue keeping him from gaining in the polls. That says nothing about the man and everything about the voters.
