Ever wonder how many lives would have been saved if we had YouTube for the Vietnam war? Or would the leaders of the day still deny the evident truth laying dead in the ditches and rivers of Baghdad? Would they still ignore the never ending stream of flag draped coffins coming in from the Middle East?
My guess is yes, they would. To deny the facts on the ground in Baghdad, it takes a Herculean capacity for denial to look at the Iraq War as nothing more than a total and abject disaster of Greecian tragedy proportions. Or they could be lying to our face. That sums up our President and his underlings – liars. No one can be so deluded as to thinking Iraq is a success. (Ok, McCain excluded.)
But what about Pelosi? How long is she going to go for the bullshit? How long will Reid back her up in letting Bush ruin the nation? So far, the Democrats have given us nothing but shame and embarrassment in the Congress. Instead of doing the job they were sent to do, they have achieved none of the major promises they gave us in the 2006 elections. I understand they also battle the Blue Dogs and there is the one vote majority in the Senate, but Pelosi and Reid haven’t even tried. They have not lifted a finger. All they have done is take after Senator Craig and dropped their pants for Bush. They have willingly bent over and let Bush have his way with the war, FISA courts and on and on.
If Pelosi and Reid roll over this time and accept another six months of continued bloodshed and violence, it is time to remove them from office. They will have proven themselves as traitors to We The People.

Stormbear, I can hear the disgust in your voice. The Democrats have disappointed us since they got into office. But I’m afraid they will do nothing (as usual) after they hear what Petraeus has to say.
I don’t know if he’ll recommend another 6 months, or CAN WE ONLY HOPE, some troop reduction starting in January but them we have to contend with Bush&Co.
And I’m positive Pelosi will do nothing, unfortunately.

StormBear,
Viet-Nam was one hell of a sitcky situation from the beginning. Regardless of what got us sent over there in the first place, the biggest problem, is that the entire conflict was being run by politicians who had no business doing anything of the sort. Period.
If the Generals were allowed to do their job and command, lead and macke tactical decisions to ensure victory, then we would have won. The politicians turned it into a quagmire and caused a hideous number of casulaties that did not need to be caused.
Unfortuantly, this is the same situation as well: The generals and commanders are not being allowed to run the war. Instead, you have the politicians making policy for the Generals. This should NOT be the case…and yet it is.
I would have hoped that we would have learned our lessons in that fact, but it is obvious that we have not.
The way I see it, is that this entire fiasco was planned from the start to a degree or their are a LOT more idiots in Washington than I had thought originally.
As far as Congress, Pelosi and most Democrats go, I think Darby Conley put it best in his Sunday Strip of ‘Get Fuzzy’

If you want my opinon, we could have had this all taken care of by now if we had the generals running the show…unfortunatly, we screwed that up before day one…

I agree…. if the locals had been given the ability to do the work of rebuilding we might be a whole lot better off. just that one tiny thing could have made a world of difference. but you could probably said that for any number of mistakes the politicians have made.
I still can’t get over the fact that Baghdad rarely has a day where the power is on more than four hours a day. I shudder to think what the water and sewer systems are like. Hell, Romans at least got that one right, thousands of years ago with much less technology.

Perfect.

I don’t know if then fixing the stuff we broke would be a good thing…
But instead of hiring outside workers, we could have hired the locals. On the other hand, the reason why the locals have not been able to rebuild is because other locals are too busy blowing things up.
What I mean by that is that I really think the petty tribal/religious/family violence is causing more problems than we did just by being there. You have Sunni-Shiite conflicts that have been surpressed for quite some time…old greivences that have never been settled all taking place now that there is no manner of law…much less a government or law-enforcement agency to maintain it.
Cruel despot or not, Saddam DID keep the people of Iraq under control, and given the Arab mentality, loyalties and all of that, I do not know if the level of stability we seek is possible. Well…it IS possible, but we (as in the US military) would have to take the kid-gloves off and force the place into a Police-State until some government can be put into power to take over.
Thinking about that, it worked in Japan and Germany after WWII…why aren’t we doing this in Iraq now? Why are we following policies and processes that were proven NOT to work (Viet-Nam) and ignoring porcesses and policies that DID work (WWII)?
