Go read this full bore, 100% Bingo article by Kossack, Brandon Friedman. From the diary…
As U.S. casualties have continued to drop, many people on the anti-Bush side of the aisle have begun to quietly panic in recent days over this question: “Could George W. Bush and Frederick Kagan have possibly been right about the surge?”
Simply put, the answer is no. The surge is not working and George W. Bush and Frederick Kagan were not right. Despite what right-wing blogs are saying, and despite what conservative observers are noting, the plunge in violence is actually the result of an Iraqi political decision made by and implemented by Iraqis—and the drop has little to do with the “surge”—an infusion of 30,000 troops (which wouldn’t fill a Major League stadium) into Baghdad, a city of six million people.
What’s happening is really simple—and it’s happening in plain sight, in the traditional media. But it just so happens that, as far as I can tell, no one is connecting the dots.
As Friedman points out, The Madhi Army went into a state of cease fire and the violence greatly retracted.
Here is my question, where is Al Qaeda? We have been told for months about Al Qaeda being in Iraq and Bush Administration has been trumpeting Al Qaeda as a reason for extending the war in Iraq.
Following that line of questioning, where are the Iranian elements? You know, the Iranians that have flooded Baghdad over the years with the sole purposes to kill Americans? What happened to them?
Maybe the Iranians and Al Qaeda weren’t there to begin with? Maybe this really was a civil war?
It isn’t the first time Bush claimed something was in Iraq and it turned out it wasn’t there. Anyone remember the weapons of mass destruction?

Spot on for the most part Storm Bear.
My only beef is the WMD comments, and here is why (this is less for you, as I have ranted on this before, and more for any other readers Storm):
I was stationed in Iraq for 13 months. Not only that, I was at Al Taji for that time, which was Chemical Ali’s base of operations. Our S-2 (intelligence, etc.) had his mansion/HQ building quarenteined due to the stuff that was in the building, and that building’s basement was purposfully flooded to destroy records.
Also, the reason why we knew there was WMDs over there was because we gave the stuff to Saddam! During the Iran-Iraq war, we supported Saddam and sold him weapons (chemical and otherwise) in massive quantities. The reason why the inspectors knew what to look for in trying to go over there was becasue we still kept the receipts.
Why was Chemical Ali’s residence and HQ never mentioned to the authorities? Because I don’t think it would qualify as the “Smoking Gun” that would satisfy the UN and others (that is my theory at any rate).
And why was the fact we sold Iraq WMDs in the first place well out of the spotlight? Because that would tarnish Ronald Reagan’s image as well as the image of the US in general – letting it be known that we were the ones that sold Iraq that stuff would destroy any arguement we would ever have of going there in the first place. I figure that getting the black eye for going after WMDs and not finding anything is not as bad as better than doing so, finding them and then letting the world find out that the ONLY reason why Iraq had the stuff was because WE sold it to them. This is also my theory as well.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to legitimize the invasion by any means. What I am trying to do is point out some discrepencies that the Left-Wingers don’t want you to know, don’t know themselves or simply just discard the information as it does not suit their agenda.

Any 1st year college student in current events history knows that Rumsfeld was Ronald Reagan’s flunky(special
advisor) and persoanlly asked Saddam what he wanted so that Saddam could use WMD’s on the Iranians because of the Hostages situation in ‘79. What you unfortunate soliders don’t understand that the american empire you are fighting for is there to protect multi-national corp. interests, not your or my fredoms. Lose a leg and you’ll
say hello REED HOSPITAL (with your bed mates of RATS and ROACHES).
Your Ignorance on foreign policy is like the other 95% of the USA population. Fear, stupidity and centrism is
the boogie-man YOU people suck-up and hate other people to justify the theft of their oil and make Geo. Bush’s Hunt Oil of Texas and Chaney’s Haliburtion of Wyoming super rich! It has been said ‘Yours is not to reason why, but just DO IT and DIE’ ! We just got out of that stupid COLD-WAR CRAP, now you are going to lose 2 more generations(your grand children I believe) to this imperalism non-sense. You want to know the irony of all this fighting for the theft of oil? Technical Developments(necessity is the mother of invention) will make OIL a non-issue in just a few years and we will not have a large enough population to control and dictate commerce like China and India will be able to! We will be
the next Great(has-been) Britain!I am so sick of the so called fighting between demos. and repubs.. A bunch of old stupid men trying to prove that they are manly-men.
It’s time for ALL of Them to Go. Thomas(rape-a-slave)
Jefferson said someting to the effect…mens flowing blood nourish’s the TREE of LIBERTY! It is Time for the USA?

I doubt it’s just the Mahdi Army standing down either. Ethnic cleansing has largely been accomplished in Baghdad and elsewhere. The winners among the tribal gangs, mafias, militias etc. for the most part have triumphed and killed or driven off their rivals.
Sadr and his nationalist Sunni allies may possibly have the votes in Parliament to demand an end to the UN mandate for the occupation, certainly next year if not this year.

Anime, if there were WMDs don’t you think Bush would have jumped all over the fact to legitimze the invasion??? We already know that WE sold them the WMDs. Bush and his cohorts are suffering greatly (their reputation) because everybody believes there was NOTHING there!
Yeah, and stormbear, all of a sudden there’s no al Qaeda…and all our boys died because of a effing civil war?

I seriously hope “Lacey” was not talking to me. I really do…
…Ok, because I am sort of spoiling for a fight (so to speak) I hope she was XD
I say this only because it seems to me that she has not read my post and actually gathered its meaning or my intent. Such is the fools of those who only read the first two paragraphs!
To answer your question Mary: No I do not think BushCo would jump all over the finding of the WMDs. Remember the paperwork was ruined and “anybody could have put that there” or what have you. I really don’t think it would hold up to the UN. Even if it were legitimate, it would be questioned. A lot.
Letting it become common knowledge to the world that the only reason why Saddam and Iraq had chemical weapons was becase we sold them to him on the cheap would be politically devastating. It is a whole lot worse digging around such then suddenly coming up and saying “Oh look! The stuff that Saddam had, that we KNEW was here? Yeah, it’s here because we GAVE it to him!” than it is to go looking around, kick some sand up or something and shrug our shoulders and say “Whoops. We could have sworn that stuff was here a minute ago!”
The latter makes us (most notably the leaders) look like idiots, the latter makes us look like conspiritors who had this planned from the 70s.
Also, what is a little black eye in the reputation, when you are making millions of dollars? I mean, come on! After these guys leave office, they will curl up somewhere and forget the world as they savor the money they got off of this.
